DIALECTICS OF IDENTITY AND DIFFERENCE by Dr. S. Sekar Sebastin

DIALECTICS OF IDENTITY AND DIFFERENCE

Abstract
Identity and difference are the terms often discussed and reflected upon. Those who favour the importance of identity with its exclusive nature in one’s life are labelled traditionalists. Those who accentuate the role of difference are regarded as people of innovation. As both identity and difference are complementary concepts, taking cue from postmodern trends, an attempt is made to get right understanding of identity with difference. It is because postmodernism de-centres the subject as totalising and unifying. It makes an implicit plea for accepting difference too. The postmodern philosophers like Lyotard and Derrida have offered us an analysis of the idea of difference in postmodern thinking. Hence, an attempt is made to explore an approach that unveils a new thinking, believing, and acting in order to highlight the importance of one identity with multiple natures, without eliminating the importance of others.
