TRADITION-INNOVATION DYNAMICS IN CHRISTIAN DOCTRINES
Abstract
Concentrating on the tradition-innovation dynamics in Christian doctrines, this essay proposes that the two elements involved are the dynamic of questioning and changes in context. This reveals various phases: scriptural phase, conciliar phase, systematic phase, a ‘dogmatic theology’ phase, and a historical phase. The scheme seems to break down in the post-historical, postmodern phase, which seems to have no place for either questioning or the related notion of truth. Interestingly, however, this last phase has thrown up a variety of postmodern theologies, some of which have begun to recover a notion of truth that incorporates the valid insights of postmodernism without necessarily abandoning the cognitive aspect of truth.
